How do I get naming rights for a plant?

Hello,

I am working for a corporate client interested in purchasing the rights to name a species of daylilly that would be used in a major, international promotions campaign. In addition to naming the daylilly, they would like to purchase the flower in large bulk for use in the project. Can you point me to a source for information on how to begin the process of purchasing the rights to name a flower?

Ask at the American Hemerocallis Society website for the names of hybridizers to contact.

Robin, you used the word "species" when I suspect you mean "cultivar". The American Hemerocallis Society is the international registering body for hemerocallis. "Purchasing the rights"? The fee for registering a daylily is minimal--maybe $10-$15. I'd have to say that it is unlikely that you will find a hybridizer with a very large supply of an unnamed seedling, but if you do, it will most likely be a Florida hybridizer. Your biggest cost will be in purchasing those seedlings.

You can apply for a patent on the name of the plant, but you can never own the plant unless you do a DNA patent. These are very expensive and not worth it.

I would go for patenting the name, Jackson Perkins has done this on a whole group of daylilies, also Centerton Nursery and their Trophy Taker daylilies.
