Pomegranate tree

The pomegranate never survives. They always have holes in them. Right now I am watching an ant crawl on spotted bark. It is right next to the compost. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. And then, my camera is fine and those are not sunspots, those are on the tree itself.
