For evergreen you could try a rhododendron. Or a hydrangea would be very happy with morning sun and afternoon shade. You have to be willing to water it though.

Azaleas, rhodies, mountain laurels, cherry laurels, hollies, yews all take shade. If you have at least 4 hours of sunlight, you could try arbovitae or dwarf alberta spruce. Hope this helps.

Great ideas above! Remember hollies will need to be sprayed with anti-desicant to keep them pretty in zone 5 cold winters (I've learned that here in Nebraska...at home in Oregon we never had trouble with dry winters). I have planted bird's nest spruce and dwarf mugo pines in the shade and they do well. They are not 5 feet tall, however! Are you making a screen with these plants or a shrub border or would a mixed bed be possible? Molly
