Asarum splendens( a Chinese species), is a widely spreading rhizomotous type that takes it's time to become established and exhibit growth above ground. If you dig around the plant, you will likely find several fleshy rhizomes, probably a foot or more in length, radiating horizontially in all directions. There are 2 known types of this species. One has aerial meristems from points(nodes) along the rhizome, with only one or two leaves. The other forms a clump of many stems and leaves only at the end of a rhizome branch. You will find a flower(calyx)only where there are 2,4,6 or even number of leaves, as the flower petiole emerges from the leaf axil. Once the plant becomes established, it will become a very attractive ground cover. Grows best in moist shade, with some morning sum. Does not compete well with tree roots. I am experimenting with some in full afternoon sun. After several years, it still spreads, but leaves are tiny(about 1/4 regular size) and it has never flowered.

So, I'm taking from that that it is not unexpected that it hasn't done much this year... but it might not be a lot bigger next year? I'll be happy with just a moderate increase from this year's size.

The part about 'not competing well with tree roots' isn't good news for me though! Depending on how she fares next year, I might need to consider a new location.

You probably won't see any new growth until Spring, even though it's an evergreen species. The new leaves will likely emerge several inches to often several feet from the mother plant, which will lose it's identity once new growth begins, unless you have the form mentioned above that forms a clump first, then begins spreading. I have one plant that formed a huge clump and for 10 years did not spread at all. Once it started, within the past 2 years it has expanded to about 100 sq. ft. and still goiiinnng!
