I would wait for the fall, that is the best time to plant trees or transplant.

I am by no means an expert but I've always thought the best time to move a tree was in late winter, just before spring. The idea being that you don't have to water and tend to the damaged plant over the winter.

Plants grow little or none over the winter, including the roots.

I'd like to hear what others say.

What is the awkward position? Pictures would be good. Also remember to get the yard painted for wires before digging around.

You probably wouldn't have much trouble with moving the (dormant) fig, but Redbuds have tap roots...I think that at eight feet you may have already missed your window of opportunity. You need to get them when they are still seedlings.

In my experience with Redbuds, the best way to grow them is from seed. Dig a nice hole and amend the soil, put some seed pods on top and mulch well with pine straw....in three years you can have all the eight footers you want with out the fussing and watering and fertilizing that actually planting one entails. They really do grow amazingly fast!
