Ground cover for under Evergreen (Shamul?) Ash Tree

What ground covers/schrubs would live under the dry shade of a large spreading Ash Tree (FRAXINUS UHDEI?) without harming it, and wouldn't be buried under the leaves every year? I don't want to rake leaves unless absolutely necessary.
