New here, and when will I learn?

Just found this place, and it's very helpful. Been gardening since I was a wee tot, but I am hardly that any more. You'd think by now I would have realized that 16 is just a dim memory in the far distant past, but nope. Not yet. Tore up my shoulder really good at Lowe's today trying to lift a huge bag of potting soil instead of swallowing my pride and asking for help.

Anyway, just introducing myself and saying hi. I garden in deep south TX within spittin' distance of Mexico, so have a long growing season, but really hot dry humid summers with which to contend. And really yukky hard-as-a-rock clay soil. SqFt Gardening is really the only way to go down here, unless I want to spend years conditioning soil before I even try to plant something...

Welcome! You are blessed with an amazing climate full of challenges I can't imagine. Our summers barely get hot enough to bolt lettuce, hehe.

Hey, love your blog, and howdy! Grew up in NJ, so am much more used to northern gardening, but married a soldier and followed him all over the place, leaving gardens behind as we went. Then I found Mel's book and had an epiphany. Left behind a few SqFt gardens too, then quit gardening for a while, as it started to hurt too much. DH is no longer a soldier, and we live down here where he grew up.
Recently the itch came back, so here we go, and gardening down here is a whole 'nuther animal. It will be a challenge, I'm sure. Especially the part about making myself go outside in July and sweat to death just to water those plants...

Welcome back to gardening! I live in Northern Florida, so I can relate to you hot, humid summers...it's uncomfortable to go outside in the afternoon...sweating in 3 seconds!

Welcome! I'm sure I'm going to learn alot from you guys this year. We're starting to get a whole slew of experienced gardeners! I'll bet EG could tell you how you could not go out to water your garden in July. There's got to be some easy automation for this.

Thanks SB! There are tons of gardeners here that can help with ways to grow during the hot dry summers. I am not one of them, and neither is Carolynp, we're just ducks up here in the PNW.

lots of good info here I am new to SF gardening but have done traditional gardening over the years but looking forward to the spring and tending to my squares
