El Nina Impact?

So I just happened to catch on the local news that the climate prediction center at the NOAA says that we are still in an El Nina pattern characterized by cold pacific ocean temperatures. It is supposed to last through the spring according to them.

La NiÃ±a continued during January 2009, as evidenced by below-average equatorial sea surface temperatures (SST) across the central and east-central Pacific Ocean.

For the contiguous United States, potential impacts include above-average precipitation in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and below-average precipitation in the southwestern and southeastern states. Other potential impacts include below-average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest and above-average temperatures across much of the southern United States.

Anyone take much stock in this? Basically saying except for the extreme southwest we are all in for above average rainfall and cooler spring temps.

They are also predicting that the winter of 2009-2010 is going to be el nino with record breaking warm temperatures through out the entire continent

Forgot to mention that this has also been the 23rd coldest winter on record for our area. I'm so sick of the snow and cold that I could scream. It's supposed to get up near fifty, but rain the whole time, then get cold again later in the week...and you guessed it! Snow! I'm still waiting for the late March huge snowfall.

The announcement came out in January, and here on the Front Range it absolutely is a La NiÃ±a year - I'm doing a bike ride in shorts today, and I had to water the entire yard yesterday. This pattern is usu what is created coming out of La NiÃ±a - warm low cutting across S Ca and cruising slowly thru NM, picking up GulfMx moisture at it chugs along.

BTW - that 'equal chance' in CA means no relief from their spectacular drought and less than full water deliveries for many truck farmers - higher food prices [/old weatherman].

Great, so another crappy summer in the PNW. Thank goodness I got early variety tomatoes so something may grow.

It should level out by early summer, and start the switch to El Nino by the end of the year.

It seems they are saying that by August we should start to see the effects of level off, and that next year will really suck as far as heat and drought from El Nino!

Oh..and for some stupid reason I put El Nina, when it should have been La Nina. My compadre would be horrified in my spanish!

Yep another here in So Cal and feeling it! Out gardening today in shorts and t-shirt! January was the driest on record and rainfall this month although prolific still means we're short on average :( They say we'll be water rationed and have to cut our usage by 20% this year!
