The best non-chemical way to destroy existing growth is to cover it with either a heavy-mil black plastic, or about 8 layers of newspaper topped by mulch to prevent in from blowing away. This process can take as little as 3 weeks with hot sun, but more is better. I use the newspaper for flower beds (with shredded cedar mulch) and pathways (with coarse woodchips).
