Greetings! I'm new to Phoenix and am very interested in attempting to grow a drawf banana tree. It could be in a container or in the ground (though given the hardness of the soil in my back yard, I think a container would be the better decision to make). Can you give me information about banana tree varieties that would do well in AZ?

Welcome to Phoenix!
I have not grown dwarf bananas. I do have some seeds from Musa Velutina that I traded for and hope they will do well here. They are a small dwarf with pink bananas.
I think any banana can do very well here and will do much better in the ground.
If you want edible friut, stay away from the seeded varieties. Banana plants LOVE compost and LOTS of water. They have shallow spreading roots that do not cause any damage.
FYI - Banana plants are addictive!
