I grew some red potatoes last year, some in a container and some in the ground to see which did best. The container plants took off the fastest, but they did sulk a bit in the heat. The ones in the ground did just fine--I didn't amend the soil a whole lot (if at all) and didn't get a huge return, but the weather didn't bother them. They were planted in a bed that gets afternoon shade.

My biggest problem was with leaf-hoppers--I didn't really come up with a satisfactory solution there.

I live about twenty miles south of Albuquerque. I've successfully grown potatoes in a raised bed. Don't start them off too deep, but after they sprout, heap soil around the plants. You don't want your potato crop to receive any sunlight as that causes chlorphyll production which results in poisonous potatoes. Potatoes which have green color should not be eaten. Potatoes are known for doing well in poor soil. It depends whether you tailored your strawberry bed specifically for strawberries if potatoes will do well there.

I had a successful strawberry crop for a couple of years. But they shouldn't be planted in full sun in this climate. They need some shade during the heat of the day. Strawberries need acidity in their soil to do well.
