Another question concerning the soil...could I get something like Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Gardening soil and simply mix it with some topsoil. If so, what ratio should I use? It says to mix it with native soil, but my soil has too much clay, so for a raised bed, I could buy a few bags of native topsoil to mix with this, right?

Why not just do as instructed by Mel and do 1/3 composts, 1/3 peat, 1/3 Vermiculite (or suitable substitute)? I ask because I'm not understanding exactly why you'd rather go out and buy topsoil and potting soil when you can just do the same with the items mentioned above.

The soil is the true method here. If I just had to skip the vermiculite search Maybe straight compost but if your gonna buy compost you should still get five different types of compost and mix them together. If you could put your hands in the Mel's Mix you'd go through the trouble.

Mel's Mix in vast quantities (like 6.5 yards) is a pain, but WELL WORTH IT! To do mine it took three of us all day and sore muscles the next, but my beds look amazing! I'm so glad I worked hard to get Mel's Mix right.

Thanks guys! I am having trouble finding Vermiculite. Anyone know where to get it in Katy, TX? Or what a good substitute would be if I can't get it? I also heard that Mel's Mix doesn't produce great results the first year, so that was another reason I was considering the other soils.

If I can't find the vermiculite, then I could just do 2/3 compost and 1/3 peat moss, or would I do half and half?

Howdy, I live in Katy also. I got a wonderful nursery in Richmond to order my vermiculite for $25 for 4 cuft. They are "Enchanted Gardens" or "Enchanted Forest" two locations. Give them a call they will help you for sure.
