Hello, I too live in Las Vegas and have been growing tomatoes and peppers for a number of years but it is a challenge! Tomatoes with the exception of some cherry types don't produce viable pollen once the temperature goes into the triple digits. After this last weekend it looks like we are at this point. They will still grow and flower but just won't set fruit. My peppers are loaded with fruit but they get sunburned every year so I think they either need morning only sun or shadecloth to protect them. As to what is eating them I'll bet it is the tomato hornworm. They are like big green catipillers with an orange horn thing on their heads. They are the same color as the stems of the tomato plant so even though they can get quite huge they can be hard to spot. I would look at the damaged area and just sit and stare at the plant until hopefully you will notice a stem that is just too fat and then you'll see the culpret. You can cut back tomato plants in September and try for a fall crop if you can get that hornworm before he eats your whole plant!
