Beans are easy. Lettuce, radishes and carrots are always great because you can get a good bang for your buck space wise.

I second the beans. Lettuce, spinach, radishes are good too. Carrots are easy as long as you can get them to germinate...

You might try cucumbers too. The biggest problem I've ever had with cukes is they can get bitter if they get too dry when fruiting. Go for a non-bitter variety.

Can you grow lettuce as a summer crop? Would someone tell us newbees what crops are for summer and what crops need to be saved for fall.

I'm trying to get some summer lettuce. I think the book said that you can grow it throughout the summer if you keep it in the shade.

Plants like lettuce, spinach, radishes, broccoli - and other "cool season" plants don't do as well in the heat. Lettuce & spinach can bolt. The lettuce will get bitter (I don't know about spinach from personal exp though). Radishes will get quite hot.

The plants that you can put out earliest in the spring tend to be the ones that don't like the heat.

That said, there are varieties that are more tolerant than others.
