Most square foot beds are at tops 4 foot in width, which makes it easy for most gardeners to reach across to plant and harvest. Also one of the most important things is not to walk on your soil because of the compaction it causes. With beds that wide you are going to have to step in to them to plant, which then will compact the soil. I love the layout, but its going to be rough to harvest veggies unless you plant them on the outside 2-4 grids, and do your flowers in the inside. Herbs would be one consideration, including chives both onion and garlic chives.

Can you plan on the teepee where you have to topless birdbath? What veggies were you hoping to plant?

I am going to plant chards, tomato, beans, dill, basil, lettuce, zucchini, marigolds, zinnia, sunflowers(lettuce and chard for the shady areas). I don't really have much experience with veggie gardening so it will be a sort of learn as I go.
I know I will have to walk in the beds which will make it compact but I don't have a choice. This is a surburban front yard so my hubby was very concerned about how it would all look from the street.

Are you willing to sacrifice a few square? What about a few stepping stones that would allow you access to the interior? That is probably what I would do because it will give you more options as to where you plant what.

My only other concern would be the placement of tomatoes so that they don't shade the remainder of the garden as they grow. What direction does the house face?

House is facing west. I know the location is not perfect, but I am willing to work with it.
So stepping stones sounds good, I have a few flagstones I can use.

I think it will be really cute. I really like the set-up.

I do know about less than perfect conditions. You should see the slope I'm having to work with!

You are brave for having this garden in your front yard in a suburban neighborhood. Were I your neighbor, I wouldn't complain at all and I hope you don't get any complaints. We have a few gardens here in the center of my town that are set up in front of the house and the gardeners are so ambitious that it is a pleasure to drive by and see their efforts. I'd think if your plants are healthy and you keep it clean, you shouldn't have any problems.

Be sure to set your tomatoes up so that they don't shade the other plants, and get a majority of sun. The flagstone idea is a good one. How about the shade? Is it possible to raise the canopy of the tree that is making the shade?
