Usually SFG spacing is determined by the "distance apart in the row" number, which would indicate 1 per square. I'm not familiar enough with this plant to give a more definitive answer, hopefully someone who is will answer.

According to the Cornell Extension, a plant has a spread of 1 to 3 feet.

yes, but are you going to let it get to be full grown before you start eating it? I would imagine you will go out there and take a little snip here and a little snip there....I've done it for years and have never had NZ spinach travel outside the single square...this is one of the things Mel talks about all the time...SFG is so easy-its hard for the experts to understand what we try to do...I'll bet if you called up Cornell and asked them, after giving you advice, if they have a SFG....the answer will be no-I'll be taking the advice of fellow SFG'ers who have the experience under their belts...just a thought...

I would say only plant 2 and cut out the weakest one if it is just you. I plant 4 for my family (2 adults and 2 children) with 1 per square foot tied to a bamboo pole to keep it from going down into the other squares. Even in row planting the suggestion is 1 per person/ household in a self-sufficient garden. In a month it will have gotten away from you even if you clip the top. Also it really does help to shorten the germination time if you file down the shell and soak the seeds overnight.

we planted one initially it grows adn spreads like a ground cover over here as it is evergreen, seeds readily and grows as volunteer easily.
