I did, just last year. Actually did it in a couple beds. The whole bed was 6 tomatoes with basil in between. Mine ran north/south which I think is what you are trying to describe. Seemed to work fine for me. I will likely do it again.

When you say they are North/South, you mean that when your tomatoes/peas are trellised up the trellis, they will form two "walls", going from North-South, correct?

I take it, that then you plant shade loving plants at the north end of the bed, and sun loving but shorter plants, to the south end (in between both "walls").

I've been pondering this same issue, as I want to grow mostly tomatoes, but also basil, peppers, and a couple of zucchini plants. Didn't think about alternating the "rows" of crops, but was thinking about two trellises.
Would be interested to know if anyone has used Mel's trellis - the conduit with nylon net? How'd that work?

iagarden, Yes exactly.
Plan your rows so that the taller plants do not shade those that need sun or vice versa. My basil grew in between the tomatoes but would grow much fuller if given more room. Experiment but keep a notebook.

You can build a raised bed that is 2 ft by 'any length' for only trellised plants.

I use Mel's Trellis and it works great for me.
