Sometimes a local garden center will have compost available in bulk. I got a couple yards of brewers' compost last year. Fortunately my son came home with his new to him Ford 250 and hauled it home - no delivery charge. It was about $30/yd. I really only have one place to get leaf and mushroom compost by the bag and it is at a local garden center. Someone said they found mushroom compost at either wally world or Lowe's. I haven't seen it at either in my neighborhood.

The very best compost to use is the stuff you make yourself. The bagged "compost" you find in stores are actually industrial waste with minimal nutrient content. This is why Mel Bartholomew recommends if you are going to use store bought compost, you should get it from 5 or 6 different sources. The other great thing about making your own compost is, it's free!

Check with any environmental education or nature centers near you. Many times they compost to teach students, but they might not have a garden on site to use it. Another idea is to skip the big box stores and go to a local nursery or landscaping center. Mine had mushroom compost and manure compost. I agree too about making your own, but you probably don't have 3 months to spare right now!! :-) Good luck.

Find a local landscape contractor supply store near you. The same places you'd buy truckloads of mulch from. They usually have either a rough 'plant mix' or even better a compost mix like I picked up from mine yesterday. They sell by the cubic yard or half cubic yard. If you can find this you shouldn't need amendments.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will start composting this year and hopefully that will be enough to mend the beds in future years. Sometimes too much research can hurt more than it helps and I feel that is what I'm running up against.

Supposed to be a great weekend here in Ohio - should be able to get all those beds filled and hopefully planted with all but the tomatoes and peppers which will wait until May.
