I would *NOT* use the fine sand that you see in children's sandboxes or sandbags. I would get a much coarser sand that includes pea-sized chunks of gravel for adequate drainage. Otherwise you may have water drainage problems and plants with soggy, drowned feet during strong rains.

Where do you get sand like that? I went to HD and one of the guys there told me to use the kids sandbox sand. He said it was all the same, so I used it for my new strawberry patch. Do you think they will be ok? I don't want to drown them!

I go to a ready mixed concrete place down the road from me that also sells gravel and sand by the pickup-load. They have different piles of gravel and grit of differing sizes. It was a LOT less expensive than buying it by the bag at a home improvement store as well. I would suggest calling up the concrete places in your area and finding out if they do something similar.

I haven't grown strawberries. I read that they like good drainage, but they're also shallow-rooted, which I take to mean that they should do fine with the way that your bed is set up now.

It'll be more critical for deeper-rooted plants. That fine sand doesn't allow much air space and gets pretty compacted itself, so I would try to get the coarser stuff for future beds. Sand/fine gravel from a bulk place should be less expensive for you as well.
