never mind...I should have done my homework first. I didn't J-root them. According to what I read, it's a 'time saving' technique where the roots are laid across the planting space, then pushed down in at the center of the root-mass, sometimes leaving the ends of the roots exposed, or very near the surface.
I didn't do that. But they aren't 'vertical' in their planting holes, either. I think I'll be ok, though.

Oh dear I spread my roots in a circle, and pretty much the roots of some are near the surface....I and going to have to check out that forum! DOH!

heather38, a circle is just fine! What you have to be careful of is not burying the crown of the plant....but don't let it stick up out of the ground too far, either. If it's too low, the plant will rot, if it's too high it will dry out. You want the soil to come right to the base of the crown.
