Ginger is a permanent planting that doubles as an ornamental - you grow it to fill a space big enough to have all the roots you need. Essentially you get a chunk of "fresh" root, put it in a big pot to baby it at first, and hope it sprouts and when its big enough, put it in a bed (or *large* container) and let it gorw, possibly using parts of the bed for annuals until the ginger has taken over.

Culinary ginger and ornamental ginger grow about the same way. (And in each case, the whole plant smells wonderful when you gently rub the leaves!)

My ornamental ginger is happy in a pot that is 1 cubic foot (1/3 meter in each measurement). It is frost tender--I must take it inside each winter. Some years the leaves dry up, some years it stays green. It does not like to be dry and hot at the same time--and the strong Texas sun will burn its leaves even in the early morning.

The ginger is planted in modern Mel's mix. I don't give it a lot of fertilizer, since it is happy to be fed about 1/4 what a veggie might like--most herbs are light feeders.
