Oh and you know when you go to the flea market and all those mexicans have their fruit and veggie stands with those odd roots and tubers and you think oooh I bet that would be a neat plant and so you ask the lady what it is and she says something like domakashalacapeadswe and so your like well what is it wanting a description and she says it a root...you know and so your like I knew that and so in the long run you still really don't what it was. Sooooooo my question is There is surly an american name for the same plant, right????? So what are some mexican names for common or maybe not socommon plants that we also have names for like as an example, and this is not actually true, but like samakalaga=taro or something like that soo lets here them.

I have been growing ginger for several years now.I cover or mulch it with pine needles in the winter. I do not know what the name of it is, but it has white blooms. Got mine from a fellow in Jackson Tn. at the mid tn. plant swap.

When we lived in New Orleans, we had a patch of ginger in the French Quarter. (Yes, courtyard, surrounded by brick walls, fairly protected by NOLA standards.)
Temps dropped to about 18F one winter. The ginger died to the ground. The bad thing was it took three years for it to come back...as in, above ground at all. Several years later, another freeze and killed to the ground again.
Only good thing was that the freeze scared it so bad that it bloomed for the first time, once it finally came back.

The answer is -- it depends on the type of ginger. There are a lot of plants that fit under the "ginger" rubric. This is where "all that scientific mumbo jumbo" starts getting handy!

The type of ginger used to flavor food (Zingiber officinale) is going to be borderline for hardiness here. It is sometimes listed as a zone 7 plant, but I think more typically as zone 8.

Norm has probably been growing one of the Hedychiums, which are also called "ginger" but are not even in the same genus. Plants in the genus Cucurma are also called gingers, and so are plants in the genus Alpinia. So you see, common names can get quite confusing!
