It's perfectly normal and not damaging. Wet and warm conditions cause them to sprout. No big deal whatsoever. Don't eat them and disturb the soil a bit to hinder their return.

Agreed on both: too much water and don't eat them.

Even when trying to hold back I seem to still be falling for the newbie / over-watering thing.

First year, and I am still so excited I want to do something every few days... I need to make sure that that something isn't watering. At least, not as often :P

The mushrooms seem to be the things that are growing best in my garden now with all the rain.

At least they appease my two yr old's desire to pull something out of the garden.

A Google search of "mushrooms in garden" yields many sites that seem to say that there isn't an easy way to get rid of mushrooms unless you dig up and replace the soil. Instead, picking them seems to destroy their reproductive capabilities.

A: Mushrooms grow because of decaying organic matter. You can dig up the general area and replace with other soil. You probably could spray with a fungicide. It is however, the fruiting bodies of fungi. There are about 3,000 different kinds of mushrooms in the USA.

Picking them and destroying the entire mushroom will get the spores - is one way to diminish the population.

They grow because you have a very good condition for them, moisture and organic material.

I would treat them as any other weed and pull them out as they grow.

I have been cleaning them out every morning. I've been picking about 10-15 a day, and they don't seem to be slowing down.

I purchased this batch of compost from a composting company. I am guessing that it there may be some decaying still going on if the compost was in a quick hot pile and not aged. We also had rain again two nights ago, so the soil isn't really getting a chance to dry up.

I have the same ones growing in my SFG here in OK. They slowed down once the rains didn't dump a 1" a day on it. Some still pop up now and than, but otherwise I just pick them and throw them in my compost bin.
