It depends on what you want to plant. Planting season for hardy trees, shrubs, and many perennials is in full swing right now! Planting season for most annuals starts after the last average frost date for your particular area. If you're thinking about vegetables, check the publications put out by the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service. I will link one such document below.

Hi Nana, welcome to TN! I have always thought of the last frost date around here as around April 15, income tax deadline day. That seems to work pretty well. Sometimes it's earlier, but I don't think it's been later than that very often.

Hi Nana and welcome to Tennessee. My garden is in Lincoln County. As Connie mentioned, the last frost date is around tax day. Sometimes I push that, but not always with success. Potatoes definitely get planted earlier. My grandfather in Louisiana always said they should be in the ground by Valentines Day. We are about three weeks or so behind him, so I normally plant potatoes in early to mid March. Onions and lettuces get planted early, too. Basil and tomatoes sometimes get planted a little after the 15th as they are more sensitive to cold. Are you interested in veggies, herbs, flowers, fruits, trees, everything or a combination? :-)

I had in mind veggies but forgot that I do have some perennials that I need to plant when we get there.

This being my first year I probably won't do a big veggie garden but will definitely want to plant tomatoes, peppers, and cukes. Maybe sugar snap peas, too.

Seeing our family and getting my gardens going gives me something to think about so I won't miss being in NJ so much.
