Your frogs are just wonderful, are you planning on breeding them in the future? They certainly look happy in their new home.

How cute! They're adorable! And VERY nice terrarium, too! I really like it. Very lush, with good plant variety. The jewel orchid is a Ludisia discolor, the easiest of the jewels. It's a terrestrial, and doesn't need very high light, but will have better colour in higher light levels. Really cute froggies! Oh, how I want some now. . . =) and I didn't know they would change colour with their mood! That's quite an obvious change, too!

Mike, I am planning on breeding. I'm in the process of building a 300 gal terrarium for the frogs when they grow up. BTW, any advice on breeding setups--haven't really seen anything on the net.

Sahoy, thanks for the comments. Most amphibians can cange from light green to dark at will...interesting isn't it? You should get some red eyes! They'd do great in your big terrarium from what I've seen. Does Canada allow animal shipments from the States?

I have a few articles on breeding red eyes that I could dig up. I will see if I can photocopy them for you. Breeding these frogs does not seem very difficult but most people use a tank designed for breeding because the frogs deposit their eggs on leaves and then the tadpoles drop off into water. I believe that breeding is induced by a period of rain showers that simulates the beginning of the wet season in their habitat.

If you could e-mail those to me (fortind89@yahoo.com) that would be great. The large terrarium will be ornamental but maybe the frogs could be trandferred to a "rain chamber" for a few weeks out of the year to stimulate mating.

No, Canada doesn't allow reptiles or amphibians across the border, but there are a couple RETF breeders here. I also know a girl who manages a pet store here that could get me anything I need from the States. But from what I've read, red eye's prefer a vertically oriented habitat for climbing, where-as I've designed mine for the terrestrial PDFs. Red-eyes are also nocturnal, and I would prefer something that I can see during the day. Eventually I do want to build a huge 4x5x2 foot paludarium though, and then I will get a few red-eyes, because I just love them!

You could rig up a misting system to simulate rain. Check out www.poison-frogs.com. The guy there also simulates a rainy season to get his darts to breed. It sounds quite simple, actually. And from my experience with misting systems, I will say: get a pump that is twice as strong as the guys at the hydroponics store tell you, and don't get cheap misting heads! I switched from 10 cent misting heads to ones that were $2 a piece, and the more expensive ones are WAY better. And the thing that really gets me is that the better ones were at Home Depot, not the hydro store. Go figure. . .

ThatÂs exactly what the breeder mentions, a rain chamber. They placed a large leafed plant in the chamber for the frogs to deposit their eggs and had a few inches of water in the bottom of the chamber for the tadpoles to drop into.

I had (emphasis on the had) a Mr. Moisture pressurized misting system from wetworks. Cost about 100 bucks. But, the whole thing turned out to be a disaster-the timer went crazy after a week of working perfectly and emptied 5 gallons of water into my non-false bottom terrarium. Then the pump burnt a hole through the top of the water reservoir, fell into the remaining 1" of water, and sizzled for awhile until it tripped the circuit breaker and all the power in the house went off. At least the house didn't burn down!
This only happedned three days ago and I've been trying to contact wetworks about getting a new pump (I think I deserve a free or discounted one-i didn't do anything wrong, the timer just went bad after a week). Has anyone ever had any experience with this company (www.wetworksms.com). Maybe they'll start returning my calls if I act like I'm going to spend a lot of money with them...
