Not a dumb question....The edible part of cauliflower is the imature flower buds. It grows above ground. I also almost certain that brussel sprouts grow above ground along the stem of the plant.

Not a dumb question at all. Now that you've seen the "button," spoil the plants with evenly moist soil, plenty of elbow room and ample nutrients. When the curd is 3 inches across, or even before, use clothespins or rubber bands to bring together 2 or 3 big outer leaves over the growing head. This will shade it from the sun, and keep it growing a while longer. Harvest it when it stops getting bigger, but before the texture appears "ricey."

Not an easy crop to grow in many climates. Perhaps you're one of the lucky ones.

Guess I don't need to worry anymore...I gambled and lost. The rabbits had a feast this past week and all the cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage is gone! Chicken wire went u and I'm replanting, not sure if it'll work though since the weather is getting warmer. :( Lesson learned!
