Some David Austins

19 years ago

The gallery is spreading thin these days. Not much to show this time of yr, so now it's time to enable everybody with our lovelies from the past season. I'll start out with the DA's. I didn't have the best of luck with these last year. But I planted a big "corral" bed around my fruit trees, and they are all doing so much better in the ground! In the spring, I'll be planting the rest of the ones that didn't fit there along the upper fence. I'm also adding a lot of other "shrub" roses, including a bunch or Harknesses and Poulsens.

A SHROPSHIRE LAD - wish he would've bloomed more...

{{gwi:1296401}}

ANN BOLEYN - this was her only bloom (she's still in a pot)

{{gwi:1296402}}

BENJAMIN BRITTEN - I love his intense color

{{gwi:1296403}}

CARDING MILL - a new one this season, didn't bloom much

{{gwi:1296404}}

CHARLES AUSTIN - I love this one!

{{gwi:1296405}}

CHARLOTTE - she got happier in the ground...

{{gwi:1296406}}

CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE - one of my favorites

{{gwi:1296407}}

ENGLISH ELEGANCE - got this one this season from Hortico and I'm gonna love it!

{{gwi:1296408}}

FISHERMAN'S FRIEND - another one that perked up when it got in the ground

{{gwi:1296409}}

GOLDEN CELEBRATION - been trying to get it to climb over an arbor, but unfortunately, this one is a favorite of the deer!

{{gwi:1296410}}

GRAHAM THOMAS - one of my earliest DA's

{{gwi:1296411}}

JUBILEE CELEBRATION - another one I really like... just wish it wouldn't hang so low!

{{gwi:1296412}}

KATHRYN MORLEY - one of the best of the light pinks

{{gwi:1296413}}

LD BRAITHWAITE - a good performer most of the time

{{gwi:1296414}}

MARY ROSE - unfortunatley she's kinda stingy, at least so far..

{{gwi:1296415}}

MOLINEUX - always interesting

{{gwi:1296416}}

PROSPERO - probably my favorite of the crimsons

{{gwi:1296417}}

RADIO TIMES - a new one this yr, hope it's as good as I expect

{{gwi:1296418}}

REDOUTE - another great light pink one!

{{gwi:1296419}}

SHARIFA ASMA - new one this season

{{gwi:1296420}}

TEASING GEORGIA - looking forward to it really taking off next yr

{{gwi:1296421}}

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL - This one reaaly took off this season, and I really like it!

{{gwi:1296422}}

WISE PORTIA - love the color on this one

{{gwi:1296423}}

Ok you guys.... let's see some of yours!!

    Beth you have some gorgeous roses in your garden. Can't match you yet, not even close. My little minis are just too small this first year. I'll have some photos next summer I'm hoping. If my Gemini finally lets loose with a blossom and AF has a couple also I might have a couple to post yet, but....in the meantime I enjoy yours and everyone else's roses, last summers or fall or not it's still nice to enjoy seeing the roses. Especially Winchester Cathedral's cluster, that's really lovely. Thanks for posting those. Leslie

    Lovely as usual. Thanks for the frank comments. For a person with small space the "every rose I grow is wonderful" reviews can be an expensive lesson.

    Beautiful roses, Beth! Makes me want Spring next week. You said that Golden Celebration was growing like a climber. How would you compare the health, bush size, etc. of it with Graham Thomas?

    Oh Beth--those are soooooooo lovely.

    Here are a couple of my favorite Austins. Don't know why I never got around to taking pics of WS2000 which I adore.

    Happy Child--terrific smaller Austin.
    {{gwi:218935}}

    Another Jubilee Celebration--I really like this one, but the pink is a bit too bright in this pic.
    {{gwi:224122}}

    I'd love to see some more Austins. Any one else have pics?

    I can see why the deer like your 'Golden Celebration' ... it looks great. And your 'Charles Austin' is definitely a looker too.

    I have a new LD Braithwaite that I just put in this fall, and I've been seriously wanting Golden Celebration.
    Winchester Cathedral looks really interesting, one I'd never thought of before. Thanks for the pics.

    Kathy, thanks I really enjoyed these pictures. Photography wise, awesome! But lovely to get a good look at other pictures of these Austin roses. Loved Shropshire Lass and now have it on my list for sure. I hope Mary Rose improves for you. It is one of my good performers, quite prolific I would have liked more fragrance though, but it is one that I would not do without.

    Thanks again for your great pictures.

    Thanks you guys!! Gary, my poor GOLDEN CELEBRATION hasn't been able to get more than about 3ft since I put it in the ground about 3 yrs ago. The deer keep pruning it down and it's not growing like it did when it was in a big pot. I put it at the arbor because it was growing like a weed and trailing all over the place. Got about 8ft long. But once it got in the ground, it became stunted. And I can't really blame the deer completely, because I only missed spraying the deer repellent early in the season (this year that is). And the dang plant never bloomed more than once and didn't grow much at all, all season. Maybe my soil is deficient in that bed. It's not the only plant in there not doing very well. CHARLES AUSTIN is on the opposite side of the arbor, and he does much better. He's about 6ft tall, but doesn't bloom all that much.

    I'm finding that a lot of these DA's really don't repeat all that well. I'm wondering if they might be roses that need heavier fertilizing? Any thoughts on that, you guys who have many of them?

    Kate I love that HAPPY CHILD! Might have to add that one to the collection!

    And Niecey! WOW! Those are some great shots! I love THE PILGRIM and PAT AUSTIN. Neither one of those bloomed much for me this past season. But I think they were getting established in the new bed. Hopefully, they'll look more like yours next yr! And I see it's not just my WM SHAKESPEARE 2000 that looks lighter red than I was expecting! Mine even got a med-dk pink bloom on it.

    Ok you guys let's see some more.... Where's Marina?

    Yeah Beth!
    Your postings make the dormant season bearable! Things have slowed down on the forum lately, must be the holidays.
    Thanks again for the Austin file!
    I only have one and it is Emanuel - Flushes are very few and it has more of a climber growth, lots of arching downward growth.

    Lovely, lovely, lovely Austins!

    I'm surprised at the color of WS2000, however. Mine is a gorgeous dark, dark red with purplish overtones--so rich and deep. Mine has never picked up the pink shades I see above. (Why didn't I take pics of my dark beauty--don't know!)

    Kate and Niecy - fabulous pics too. Gorgeous picture of Orthello - they are all fabulous. Hope to post some of mine later too.

    Beth, you have some seriously gorgeous Austin's. Just to name a few favorites, Kathryn Morley, Prospero, LD Braithwaite.
    Niecey, your Evelyn picture looks like silk mixed with tissue paper. I so enjoyed your beautiful pictures. You gals have some great roses and photography is wonderful.

    Beth I just had to come back for a second look at those gorgeous Austins of yours.
    I always wanted to try Fisherman's Friend, but I heard so many negatives about it that almost made me change my mind but seeing yours I am having second thoughts, I just love that vibrant red color bloom.
    Thanks as always for posting your lovely pixs.

    P.S. I can see why these animals enjoy your roses so much cuz all them pretty color blooms looks like candies in their eyes.

    Here's some of mine, but do not have nearly as many as I would like, but three more being delivered any time, so hoping to steadily increase my stock, this is why it is so great to see other folks' pictures posted and comments too, that helps big time.

    St. Swithun- nice blooms - tall and bushy. Moderate fragrance to my nose.

    Pretty Jessica - short, upright, very fragrant

    LD Braithwaite - love it! not much fragrance, but it is a keeper

    Brother Cadfael - probably the most beautiful blooms and colour IMO of any Austin
    and the fragrance matches these.

    Charles Rennie MacKintosh - very new - much sorted after, so hoping it lives up

    Charles Austin - Beautiful colour - moderate fragrance

    Evelyn - can be very beautiful - moderate fragrance for me

    Mary Rose - light fragrance - proflific - lovely pink, I would not be without this, either.

    Mary Rose

    Tamora - quite new - really like it, still small - lovely fragrance

    Abraham Darby - not too prolific for me, but the fragrance is quite exceptional

    Constance Spry - we do not have ideal conditions, so it could do better,
    but one I always had to have - perfume is delicious

    Another Golden Celebration - couls not do without it, but quite floppy for me. Nice fragrance,
    beautiful bloom form.

    Sharifa Asma - my first Austin and still my favourite. For me Prolific,
    most fragrant and tidy medium sized bush.

    Sharifa Asma

    Two faces of William Shakespeare 2000 - still new in
    my garden - but I think I am going to love it

    WS 2000

    Belle's story - not my favourite for sure, but one
    of the most photogenic roses I have

    Moodyblue... these are some gorgeous photos!! Now I'm really upset that I lost my CHARLES RENNIE MAC! He's even more "lavender" than I had hoped for. Guess I have to reorder him now. And BROTHER CADFAEL, EVELYN and BELLE STORY... Oh my!!

    Thanks guys, much appreciated. I had wanted Chas. Rennnie Mac for a very long time and could not find a source for it. Finally, I got it from Hortico this Spring and I am delighted, little slow taking off, but hopefully, next year. I am still wanting a genuine Austin "Lilac Rose", though!

    I am waiting delivery (in the Austins) of Glamis Castle, Alnwick Castle, and Grace, while the Spring order is going around in my head. :)........and you are so right Carla, and I guess most people who read this thread, that Austin blooms, in general, are special - and also incredibly romantic. HTs are beautiful, but are they really romantic?? :)

And can't wait til my GEOFF HAMILTON gets mature like that. And OMG, your GOLDEN CELEBRATION is just breathtaking! Beth, I'm not so often in the Forum lately - pretty busy with moving to new house. I stumbled upon your post last night...

    Randy, Golden Celebration is creme de la creme of my Austin roses - I have five or six of them. Gorgeous blooms, gracious bush - what not to love?!?! I would recommend this rose without hesitation (at least to the people living in similar climate).

    Beth, Geoff Hamilton (I have five of them) is awesome in spring with not so much to write home about later in season. I just love that incredible spring flush.
    Wisley is one of the best latest Austin introductions - blooming continuously the whole season (even in the heat of mid-summer). Bush stays mannerly and compact.

What about your roses? - are they moving too! :)Wonderful seeing some more varietys - fabulous pictures. Great to see Glamis Castle, as I have it in transit to me. You have certainly helped me decide my next order. Thanks again for posting the pics, and Beth, thanks for starting it.

    Pauline, yes, some of my roses are moving with us - I'm digging them out and potting right now. About 200 done, about 100 more to go.

    Some people on this forum posted negative comments about Glamis Castle. I can not say anything bad about this rose. I have five or six of them and with more or less regular spraying they stay clean for me and bloom a lot.

    Wow! Marina, beautiful! What a fantastic canvas you have to work on with all that pasture. You must be very excited. Love seeing an all brick home. Coming from England, many years ago, that was always the norm, not so on the Canadian West coast. Gone back east a few times in the last few years, and was very impressed with all the brick homes. Good luck with everything. Looking forward to seeing the progress of your new rose garden!
