Hmm, I would have planted 4 per SF. However, I would probably harvest them down to the right spacing if you want. My brother grows in rows right on top of each other. It works bit you have to harvest more often. To each their own.

Last year I scattered mine and let them grow wherever, but I had them in a 3'x4' bed of their own. I harvested 1/4 of the bed at a time, just cutting the plant to within a couple of inches from the ground, so by the time I harvested the fourth 1/4th, the first was ready to cut again. That kept me in greens until I had to leave the garden, the end of October. However, I was harvesting mine to feed my rabbit. He didn't care much about the size of the leaves, just the amount in the bowl. If you thin them you will have much larger plants, but you also risk removing some of the different varieties. They do transplant pretty easy, so if you have room, you can just carefully dig up some of them and move them elsewhere...or into a container/planter.

What's helpful is to understand what plants in this mix are the ones you like. You may want to let some go and find out what the fam eats. I had one mesclun mix in the coldframe that lasted all winter and two plants everyone loved, and 3-4 others were OK. And one of the loved ones produced prolifically.

Anyway, maybe you need to do a garden trial and then next season (fall) do the right spacing. YMMV.

Thanks all. I'm the only one who really eats it anyway. I planted 4 squares, and I like all the varieties. I decided to thin it some but not quite down to 4 per square yet. I got a nice little salad of baby greens from it- my first from the SFG!

I have one square of the Meclin Mix growing. I did thin it somewhat, b/c it was way too much.

However, it is still no where near to Mel's specs. I two other boxes with Romaine, Salad bowl and Bibb. These are to Mel's specs.

The Mesclin in huge and one other poster was right, there aer some varieties that the fam just doesn't like.

So those I have thinned out to give room to others that they tolerate better.

My kids do not like a whole lot of salad, but they lke that they can pick it out of the garden themselves and not have to eat lima beans, instead.

Most mesclin mixes are to be given hair cuts then allowed to grow another crop of hair for the second or third cutting. You can as the plants get bigger thin the ones you don't like leaving room for the ones you like to get larger. However since this is spring when it gets warmer the plants will send up flowers and change flavor.

You can get the mixes, depending on type, to winter over but they must be planted as a fall crop. Depending on where you live any where from August on. Anniesgranny is doing it the smart way 1/4 at a time.
