Well, it looks to me like bleached-out cypress or mopani wood. I'm not saying that that's what it is for sure, but it doesn't look like any certain kind of wood. It does say in their description (on the website) that it's been sandblasted, so maybe that's why they call it 'ghost' wood. I suspect the name is just a marketing gimmick. For cypress or mopani wood in equally interesting shapes, check your local pet store. It won't be cheap, but you can always bleach it yourself, either by leaving it outside in the sun for a year or so, or by soaking it in a chlorine bleach solution.

I guess ghost wood just means it's a completely dead piece of a tree. That stuff is usually quite expensive. I ordered some pieces from driftwoodsupply.com and I'm really happy with them. Very well treated, does not rot even in very humid conditions and reasonably priced. And the best part, they have pictures (hundreds) of every single piece with dimensions, so you can get exactly what you need.

yeah.. no kidding.... i ordered form black jungle.. got me some ghost wood.. well for 20 i coulda just went and cut up a manzanita in the back for less and got some thing with a little more personality.. any ways thanx for the link

Someone who has sold Ghost Wood for years said that "Ghost wood IS NOT oak." He said that it IS NOT the same as other types of wood commonly sold in the pet trade. He chose that wood for their vivarium products due to its unique qualities and beautiful appearance. He only knows of one distributor of this wood who would not divulge its true species name.

He said he has seen that wood in nature and that it grows as a shrub in certain western states but he also would not divulge the genus or species to protect it from illegal poaching. He contents that its limited range as well as collecting permit regulations dictate the cost of the unusual wood. It processed by sandblasting which adds additional costs.

Along with its beautiful appearance, Ghost wood possesses natural properties which allow it to hold up very well under wet conditions which makes it so highly desireable.

I have ordered many pieces of ghost wood from black jungle-they are very nice and hold up well in a terrarium (then again they are also quite expensive).

It's definatly not cypress or monopie.

It is actually sandblasted MANZANITA trunk (or thick limb)

I have a couple of pieces, they are Ok, but I prefer cork.
It more interesting and has a variety of browns that gives it a very unique look.
