You could do several plants of each of those in a single 4' x 4' bed, two of them should be more than enough.

I did my plan in excel (below) simply by stretching out the column and row width into squares and coloring the background on them appropriate to color code them. The image of the compass might be overkill but it helps me remember I didn't position my beds on an axial direction.

I think it is important to think about the direction and height. Think about how the sun will hit your garden and try to prevent tall plants from shading shorter plants (unless done intentionally).

Arjo_Reich and engineeredgarden: How did you plant your melons... did you actually give them 2 feet of space on the trellis, or did you plant them one plant to a square foot?

As Ray Scheel has it in the faq's ,the recommended spacing for melons is 1 per 2sq ft.I would follow his advice.I consider Ray to be one of the leading authorities in this gardening method.He's the man....

lol, at this point I have two plants per square foot for the cantaloupe and watermelon. I intend to think out to one per square, choosing the strongest of each once they get several sets of true leaves. If the plants get to crowded on the trellis (8' x 4' from the top of the bed, not bottom) I'll just start trimming off a couple leaves hear and there to open it back up.
