I just planted some yesterday (SFG newbie here). I spaced them 1 per square.

I did them last year 1 per square did well. Anything more dense would be pushing it. They are tall plants so keep in mind your exposures. You don't want them south of bush beans for example. I was only in zone 5 and they got to 4 feet.

I've heard of them getting to 12 feet in the south. Mine are south of my tomatoes. I love okra, but I will prune and thin them if they threaten my tomatoes.

I may not have a problem. I live in Texas, so the sun is not as low in the sky as it is for folks up north.

The first year I grew okra, I planted them 2 per square. Mind you, I started late in the season (June 29), but did manage to get 1 pod...out of 6 plants.

Yep. I did grow them in 5a but they need 80 degree soil for germination. Direct seeding will give a decent month of pods in zone 5. Transplants are probably better and if you are desperate put a portable green house over the SFG and you can extend the season rather well though the Okra can get a little high.
My zoning did not like even the temporary structure though it did give me a great 2 weeks of okra and peppers that is until I got the "please remove" letter from the village. Now I use it for spring green house duties in the back yard which is not shaded until mid-may.

This actually just about fits on top of an SFG and I got it for $70. The 5 X 5 will fit over it and go higher. If my zoning allowed it I would have at least one of these for such heat loving crops. Nobody else was producing okra and green bell peppers in early October in Chicago. Crisp high 60 days with sun felt 90 and humid in these things.

The spring house can even go over a decent sized trellis.I have that as well. I should say 4 feet at least in this thing since it was hitting the roof of plant house and bending. You will also need to water less. in this space. That is how I would recommend doing Zone 5 okra in an SFG.
