I have had that problem in the past. Now I simply start them in a small tray of potting soil and transplant them. I use the same method with leeks. Good luck!

Thanx nanagarden. At least I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one. Do you transplant them as a group, or one at a time? Seems that it would be hard to do one at a time unless you waited until they were quite large.

Onion seeds can be a little finicky. They are best started in cell packs or flats. Once they get a few inches high, you separate the individual plants and transplant them in your garden.

If you aren't looking for a particular variety of green onion, you could try using white onion sets (which are little thumb sized onion bulbs). They save time and are alot easier to use than onion seeds when all you want are green onions. All you gotta do is push the set into the soil, water them, and when they get to the size you want, pull them up and eat 'em.

I much prefer onion sets for green onions, way faster too. I start a few every two weeks so I can eat them young and tender.
