Some folks pinch off female flowers after fruit has set on a vine, down to one or two melons per vine. More energy spent on fewer fruit means bigger fruit.

I plan on doing something similar if mine set fruit.

Now to find out the difference in male and female blooms.

Male flowers will have just the flower on a stem. Female flowers will have a bulge just below the flower which becomes the fruit if it's pollinated. If it looks like you have a baby fruit but it turns yellow and falls off while still very small, generally that means that one didn't get pollinated.

Do you have enough bees or other insects around to pollinate your melons ? If not, you may need to pollinate by hand.
