Hey I really like that site. The Jr. Master Gardeners need to make a bag garden and a keyhole garden in our community garden. They do square foot gardens now but what great new gardening ideas for the kids.

I'm curious about this part of the article:

"Inside, the garden-beds are layered with tin cans, mulch and ash which together provide the nutrients to make the gardens extraordinarily productive."

Do the tin cans really add nutrients? Or do you think they are just for bulk at the bottom?

According to the sites I just checked out on google, a tin can takes 100 years to break down, so I assume they are probably used more for bulk than anything else in the keyhole gardens. On the other hand, I would think that mixing the tin cans with mulch and ash may make them break down more quickly.
