If you want black soil down here, you better bring it! Can you say 'red' or 'orange'? When I first came here from Michigan, I couldn't believe that stuff that I saw plowed up in fields was really dirt. It's suppose to be black, isn't it?
This is my first year with a garden, and it was just broke up the other day. I was worried about how 'chunky' it would be, but it is really fine. Looks awesome, and I can't wait to plant in it. I haven't started any composting or anything yet, and I'm sure once I do, the soil will greatly improve, but like I said - it looks great.
Can't give you much info, cause I'm such a newbie, but just wanted to welcome you to our great state.

We have black soil here in West Tn. down in the bottoms next to the Mississippi River, it washed down here from some state up north. Wellcome you will enjoy our winters. I know because I spent 11 years in the Quad City area.
