soil question

This is my first year square foot gardening and I'm having a rough time with it. I like the square foot method and am blaming most of my troubles on the soil I purchased ( a 'garden mix' from a local nursery). For next year I plan on replacing the mix with something that is more like Mel's mix- something I should have done in the first place. I could not find vermiculite and the cost of the perlite was budget-breaking. I did find a potting soil that I've been happy with and am wondering if I could use it for an opened bottomed raised bed. The bag states that it is sphagnum peat-85% and perlite. It does have a minute amount of fertilizer in it. Would this be appropriate to use and how many parts of it would I mix with compost? Thanks!
