Hey, Mona, I remember meeting you at the plant swap. I took a photo of you with another lady near the house.

My worms are very small. They look like they are just about 1 1/2 inches long and very thin about the size of a medium size finish nail. They are brown with a tiny bit of reddish brown hue and one end (the head?) looks a little bigger and a little more reddish brown.

I am trying hard to amend my heavy clay soil. I don't seem to have many earthworms, but I have noticed that where I do see them the soil is noticeably better. I don't know if this is cause or effect, but I would really like to purchase a thousand or so earthworms and let them loose. I have 3/4 acre. Does anyone know where I can buy them? I live in Knoxville. Do you think 1000 is the right number? DH thinks it would be a drop in the bucket.

I am no expert, but suspect that soil has to be ammended somewhat before adding earthworms will be effective. One easy way to ammend your soil is to add a layer of mulched leaves in the fall to your beds. When I started adding the leaf mulch, I saw an immediate increase in earthworms in those areas.

Katie, Chances are the worms that you were given were those typically used in worm bins - - Red Wigglers. Red Wigglers live in the upper soil layer and will not harm your garden, but may not survive our winter.
