My new baby! Pics!

I might have just built a new edition to my garden. I swore I was going to wait until next year but my strawberries were shooting runners all over the place in my garden so I decided to move them now before they got any bigger and out of control.

The new bed is 4x10. With sections being 1'x10' on the sides and the center being 2'x10' AND also double the height of the outside. Mostly just for looks, I wanted to add some dimension to the garden. :)

Here is the work in progress. DH wasn't around to go in the garage attic to get my weed barrier stuff so I substituted with cardboard LOL. I know the space between the other beds is not a lot, BUT there will be nothing bushy growing out the sides. The one side is strawberries, the other will be lettuce. I'm not sure what I will plant in the middle yet. I will figure that out next year. Nothing is going in there this year, except something to kill the grass LOL.

I am going to switch up my single boxes next year too. Put ore of a solid fencing on the inside sides of the boxes and leave the other sides open for access from the outside.

Here is the new bed...

Here is the WHOLE garden which has (1) 4x10 bed, (1) 5x10 bed, and (2) 1x10 beds.

Here is my 3yo's sunflower that he started in the house and is now HUGE!

And just a few other shots of the garden.

Yay! You can plant some carrots in the middle part. That's a really tall sunflower, also. You might be able to get a goose that lays golden eggs, eventually. LOL. Watch out for the giant, though! One question, Jeni.....how many trips are you gonna have to make with that green wheelbarrow filled with dirt - to fill up that new box? Ok, just kidding. Thanks for sharing, it all looks very good.

ROFL. Actually that is called child labor. I sit back with a beer and make the kids fill the box with dirt. Duh.

That looks wicked cool! How did you fit those wood pieces? Have you thought of how the raised pieces are going to affect the shadow and light during the day? Probably no big deal given that open space. Is that a swingset in the background? LOL, I can't wait for the kids to get out of the swingset so I can trellis things up it, lol. It's the best sunshine in the yard, too.

I have thought about the sun and everything, that whole area gets sun pretty much from 10am (as soon as it reaches over the 3 seasons room) and then until sun down. When I built it last night I was watching the shadows and such of everything. Nothing was blocking it off at all. The box on the south side MIGHT shade a little bit but thats why I am putting lettuce there :)

I'm thinking the center will get things like onions...carrots...and I'm not sure what else. Maybe some pepper plants since (at least mine) don't get very tall. I would like to redo some things in the original big bed and add more peas and cucs in there and trellis some things differently. Good thing I have a few months to figure it all out ;)

Oh, as for how I fit the wood, not sure what you mean. All that is there is (2)2"x8"x10' (outer sides), (2) 2"x12"x10' (inside bed), and (1) 2"x6"x8'.

Took the 2x6x8 and cut it into (4) 1' pieces, and (2) 2' pieces.

Then just started screwing it all together!

Crap!!! I can't get my boys to help me at all. When I ask them to help, all I get is "Aw, man....how long is it gonna take"? *sigh*...Then, I tell them - " Grab a âââââ¦â« shovel, and get your Â®Â¥Â»Ä out here! Lol "facepalms"

ROFL, yep, cut me off a piece of that kid labor, too. Though, I do have the kids weeding.
Errr...maybe I should explain that I just nailed my boxes together and that will clarify how confused I am about your boxes. Did you use one of those corner things inside the box? Else, how do you screw the side after you've put the other side on? I can't think how else to phrase the question. I may try one of those. It looks really neat. And what a great idea! Carrots, spinach, lettuce in the middle: full sun, yet ample shade.

Well you see my babies are 2 and 3. So they LOVE to help mommy. Its still COOL to help mommy......and I might just sit there and ooooooh and aaaahhhhh their work and them being such BIG boys and BIG helpers and yeah you get the idea. Fill em up with love and I get a few minutes of free labor....until they spot the trampoline and remember that its more fun.
