wilting tomato

This whole forum thing is brand new to me so be patient with a learner! The tomato in question is about three feet tall, maybe just under, The wilting did occur rapidly with no change in color, although yesterday I found one leaf with striations that seemed to follow the vein pattern in the leaf. The stem does have small light green lesions at the lower end of the stem. The brown area is hard not appearing rotten as I think it would in damping off. I also thought of Southern blight with great fear...but cannot see any evidence of a white fungus on the brown area. There was an offshoot coming from the base which appeared to have gotten ripped off somehow, but I wouldn't expect that to have created a girdled brown area, only a wound spot. There are no lesions on the leaves. Up to three days ago this was a healthy looking plant with flowers ready to become fruit! I will try to get a picture of it for you all to see this afternoon. I appreciate all advice! Thanks

I believe you already started a thread concerning this problem. I assure you the person that responded ( Carolyn ) in your first posting is one of the most knowledgeable persons you could ask for.

It may be that you were only trying to respond to her off your original thread. If so just open it up and post your additional comments.

Try this, cut a stem where you see those lesions. smell it. If it smells nasty the you could probably be having a bacteria problem. Another way of telling is to put the cut stem in a a clear glass filled with water, stir it gently, if you see some mucus-like (white cloud-like) oozing from the stem, then it is definitely a bacteria. If you observe this in the whole row of plants, then the disease is probably spreading. However, if the pattern of wilting in your plant row is random, then i might be a fungal problem.
