If you can reach to the center of the bed easily without EVER stepping on the dirt, then go for it. I've seen a big square with a path down the center. Whatever works for you.

Laura - Yay! It will work out for ya. Let me know what your dimensions will be, and I can make a drawing (template)for you - not for construction, but for future layouts of plantings. That way, you will have an electronic copy to print off any time you need to, and can just pencil-in what your veggie plantings will be for the upcoming season. If you need any other input at all on construction, feel free to ask. I like helping my friends.

1. Hubby probably can help with posting pics to forums as he's on computer gamer forums all the time. He's the definite geek in the house and I border on Luddite.

2. So, on that note, when we get it done (tomorrow hopefully), I will take photos and upload.

3. EG - I'd love to send you dimensions! I'll do that when I've got it done.

4. Decided that, for various reasons, I'm going to "make" soil (composting) and start the SFG in the spring after all. In the meantime, I'll be doing as square inch gardening. This will help me see how things grow anyway. And I'll keep on reading what y'all have to say and will be so READY in the spring! :)

As for the polygon, it doesn't have to be square to be SFG. Also, it doesn't have to be Mel's mix to be SFG, it can be 100% compost as well. That is what Mel teaches in other countries where they just cannot start with Mel's mix. I still think it's best to start with multiple sources for the compost so it's got more nutritional content for the plants.

FYI - polygon is sorta done. Turns out I'm leaving one side open so I can continue to "make soil" easier. I'm experimental and often times a little unrealistic but I sure have fun with my experiments. I mean, I'm making the soil based on a mix of composting principles, so I think it'll be ok but might have to supplement at the end when I'm ready to plant in springtime. Anyhoo, I know I owe pictures and I also owe EG dimensions but I am DOG tired so I'll get out there and measure later this week, and take pics. Was tempted to have hubby take one of me mid-project. I was LOVELY as you can imagine, especially since it had rained so we were working in mud. It's not so much that I decided against the picture as it was that I forgot. As usual.
