holes in tomatoes?

I'm an extreme newbie on tomatoes. I have 4 "windowbox" tomatoes planted in 2 36" windowboxes on my patio. They're in good organic soil, I've been giving them Miracle Gro every 2 wks., and it's been sunny. hot and pretty rainy for the past week. The plants are growing very well and have been healthy, but now that the tomatoes are about 1-2 in. long, many have a single large round hole on the lower half - not on the blossom end, but on the side. Others just have a large black spot. I haven't seen any bugs or worms. Is this a fungus? Should I be spraying with something? Thanks in advance!
