well, maybe its the green only being composted?? i compost green and the browns, you can use newspaper, shred it of course it will help it, card board and tear it up. but i think they might need that. i know kimmser i think that's his name or her, but they said clay is good for your plants, but not a whole lot, just mix it in really good. kinda like a tea, LOL ok, i know i'm like really wierd. LOL but that's my guess!! LOL are they watered enough? and the light?? how's that? ~Medo

What did you plant and how long did it take to produce>

I planted okra, swiss chard, green peppers, parsley, cucumber, cantelope, watermelon, basil, onions, squash, eggplant (planted it most recently within the past month and it is actually growing faster than the other stuff based on how long it's been there).

The watermelon had 2 tiny melons and they were attacked by squash bugs (which I killed, but it was too late) but the vines themselves are really puny too. The cantelope is also not growing too much, but they do have lots of flowers now and a few tinee weinie melons (like the size of a large marble)

The onions pretty much disappeared completely, they were grown from seed and were put in when the bulbs were about the size of a large pearl,

I'll take photos today and post the old ones along with todays so you can see.

I planted squash, okra, peppers, swiss chard, parsley, watermelon, cantelope, in several different beds.
My mix was equal amounts of composted material (all green) and then composted material containing manure, and perlite.

10 Inch beds

I laid cardboard on the ground and then filled them up.

A few peppers are greening up, a few watermelons are starting to grow, but not much else.

It's been about a month since most everything was put in. I grew everything from seed. I've been watering by hand almost daily (due to the heat we have had).

I broadcast some osmocote yesterday in all the beds. Maybe that will help.

any suggestions? thoughts?

I'm in zone 7b, so our weather is pretty similar. We have had some setbacks this year, so we are two weeks behind on our growing season. What are the dates you planted? Also, what varieties? Are they short season crop varieties? I am just now getting ripe tomatoes, so if you planted near when I did, maybe your garden is doing ok? I planted memorial day-ish. It is VERY hard to get melons in our neck of the woods. Usually the plant is just fruiting when our first frost sets. I started my pumpkins inside. Same with the watermelon. They are both just now fruiting. I know that the short time I lived in Columbia, SC, we had wild melons everywhere, so maybe you should talk to your local extension.
