Holes on Tomato Shoulders

Almost all my tomatoes have holes on their upper surfaces this year. I had thought it to be birds pecking, but I am now thinking that it is slugs -- because of traces of silver slug trails in some of the holes. I haven't seen any slugs on the fruit or plants, however.

Believing this to be a not uncommon problem, does someone have a more solid diagnosis? And, of course, a cure.

Regards, Peter, Southeast Michigan.
