I planted my first SFG last week and I planted 3 collard transplants - one in each square and I fertilized with Miracle Grow as I watered. Hopefully, that was the right thing to do --so far they seem to be growing.

Betty, I fertilized mine with a nitrogen rich fertilizer as I planted them, and, according to my reading, collards like to be side-dressed with nitrogen as they grow. My main worry is if it's too hot in FL to plant them right now and if/how long I'll be able to harvest from them.

I'm also a little worried that they might be too big (fully-grown) for my SFG since they supposedly grow as tall as 2 feet and 4 feet wide. That's one of the reasons I scattered them rather than planting them close to one another.

Let me know how yours grow and I'll share my progress as well.

I planted 16 squares by direct seed, 1 per square - and the little seedlings are tiny. I haven't fertilized them yet, but pobably will this weekend. I hope MG is good enough, because that's all I use on everything. I've never grown these before, and I understand they get really big. I plan on picking them before they get too large for the space. Hopefully, this will be after the first frost, because they taste much better after frost has fallen on them. Any input on this will be appreciated.

I've never done collards before, but my neighbor keeps asking me to grow some for her....I might as well since I did plant 12 extra onion starters in her flower bed one day while she was at work since I couldn't fit them in the sqft'er.

Hey! I couldn't throw them out!!!! The vegetable gods would have been all over that one.

I agree, Ribbit! Never throw away a good transplant.

lissa - thanks for letting me know about the nitrogen - so far mine are looking good but I will get some fertilizer to side dress them. One of these days, I 'll take photos to show the progress.
