Actually, frost isn't that far off, even in Alabama. I'm thinking you have a month and a half to almost two months. Tomatoes are out, but you can certainly do radishes and lettuces and if you go purchase transplants you can even get broccoli, cauliflower, collards and a whole bunch more in there as well.

First frost date where your mother lives is probably October 25th - 10 days later than mine...Lettuce, radishes, collards will grow well for you.....

Thanks for replies. I didn't realize/forgot we have a deer problem. I went ahead and bought some collards, a couple of leaf lettuce and broccoli at wallyworld. Tomorrow I'm getting some Liquidfence.

Dude up the road from us plays a radio outside to keep away the deer. I don't know if it works or not, they can't jump our fence, but he swears it makes them think people are around so they wind up staying away. I think they'd almost get desensitized after a while.
