No reason it shouldn't work. It's pretty commonly done. There are plenty of articles about it if you google 'growing lettuce container'.

thanks brandon. i'll try that. I was just wondering with our heat and humidity, if it would work- don't wanna waste seed, but would LOVE fresh organic salad greens all summer.

Hi Novice, The best lettuce I ever grew was sown in the winter. Lettuce tends to bolt in the heat. That covers my experience with lettuce. I have to admit that I am not clued in to new varieties of lettuce. Sowing the seed in shade or under a shade cloth might just do the trick. If the seed was not expensive what do you have to lose by trying? Trying new things leads to new discoveries. Good luck and lettuce know how it goes.

Thanks ladybug. I think I'll wait to plant it until the weather is closer to fall. I tried growing lettuce indoors, not much luck.
