Would you buy worms?

I have no worms in my raised bed. No worms near or under my compost pile. No worms were found when my husband dug up to plant tomatoes around the deck. We occasionally see one dried out on the sidewalk after bad weather -- probably 5 or so total over the last 2.5 years.

There are some worms living under the pea gravel under the kids play area, that's it.

I'm thinking about putting some in the SFG. There will be 8-12" of soil and compost in that bed, plus it is setting directly on top of old lawn. I'm in SE TN, so I don't think overwintering will be an issue out there.

What do you guys think? If you were considering doing this, where would you get the worms? What kind would you get?

I thought about posting this over on vermicomposting -- feeling a little too underinformed for that right now.

I think I would go to a local bait and tackle shop, and buy a carton of worms from them, and just dump the whole thing into the garden. The price shouldn't be but maybe $2, and the variety will either be redworms or nightcrawlers.

I agree with EG. I've heard worms that are brought in and dumped in the garden won't live, so I wouldn't spend too much on them unless it proved to be successful. I would think local bait shops might carry local worms that would be accustomed to the area.

I didn't have any worms at all until I added the compost and Mel's mix to my garden... it's the oddest thing as now I have attracted worms along with other critters... YUCK!

I was thinking about doing vermicomposting and spent quite a bit of time reading up on the forums here... I would buy redworms... A matter of fact, I almost did! LOL

If you have a few RWs and if you give them the right conditions, you will have many. I thought that the moles were eating all my RWs until I started digging to the bottom of my 1 yr old SFG. There were worms everywhere. I would give your SFG at least a year and see what happens before I bought any.
