No large sprouts yet.

In the summer I read somewhere that if you fertilize your Brussels Sprouts the heads will not be firm, so I quit fertilizing them in early summer. Right now I do not have many large heads and it's mid October! Was I wrong to quit fertilizing or is it still too early???
