first adventures in Tennesse gardening

We made it to Tennessee and since the weird weather was cold and cloudy in early May I couldn't resist setting out plants and bulbs(Ok, I confess, I was out planting flower bulbs and fruit plants before I finished unpacking). My gladiolas are growing like weeds and the rhubarb and strawberries are doing well in spite of the heat now. Isn't it exciting to start a new bed or garden and see the first sprouts shooting up? Thanks to the garden web folks who told me how warm it was here so that I knew to set plants out where it is shady. Found out that we have two apple trees here and the neighbor has been feeding them to the deer. I hope he doesn't expect me to keep up on that habit. I have been going out every day to see how tall those glads are getting and my family has come to expect my daily report on how well they are growing. Isn't it exciting when you see new plants growing on your own place and know that a once neglected property will soon be bursting with flowers and food for your family instead of weeds. I love it here in Tennessee. Sorry, I do run on, but I am so happy to get those old bulbs going and have an adventure in growing starting. Bring on the plants it's a great day to grow things.

Welcome to Tennessee! I hope that you enjoy gardening here. I'm in middle Tennessee... Hermitage, in fact.

I do the same thing... plant something and then check on it daily for any signs of progress. But there's nothing better than playing a role in making the world a little more beautiful, is it?

don't be surprised if the deer help themselves to some of your new plants. Apparently they have thier likes and dislikes as we have found. They mowed thru all of our hosta along the driveway for 3 or 4 years before we moved up near the house. Safe so far.....there is a shurb that has green and golden colored leaves that they love to eat.....good luck.

What part of Tennessee did you just move to??? I am from Katy, Tx living in Daphne, Al for the summer but we are moving to the Chattanooga area, while we're looking for property to buy around the area in the surrounding little towns. Wanted to know with the weather being so different than that of Texas what would be really good to grow as for fruits and vegetables, and flowers and trees??

I live about 25 miles west of Chattanooga in the Kimball-South Pittsburg area. Let me know if you want the name of a good realtor or info about our area. Be sure and visit "The Barn Nursery" in Chattanooga. Any kind of plant or advice you could want. Good luck.

We moved to Chattanooga in 2008 and lived in an apartment for a year or so until we could have a look around. A year later we found a house in a suburb of Chattanooga named Flintstone, Georgia which is a very close drive to downtown Chattanooga and very affordable housing. By the way, I have also lived in Daphne and Fairhope, Alabama in 1995-1997. We didn't grown things there except on the deck of our apartment in Daphne where we won "Terrace of the Month" - lol. It depends on your yard around here as the area is very diverse with mountains, hills and valleys.

If you are a new Tennessee gardener, get ready for a season full of regular nightly watering experiences. This year, due to the extreme heat, we, in Middle Tennessee, have started watering early. Oh, well - we had nothing else to do at night for the next 3-4 months other than stand in the heat and sweat!! Good luck with your gardening experience.

I'm new here too. I moved here in May,2011.
Having lived all my adult life in the arid West, I'm still amazed at the whole water-falling-from-the-sky thing.
I'm in Hohenwald, in middle Tennessee.
I don't have a garden yet, (still looking for land to buy) so I started with patio pots of tomatoes, basil, and wheat-grass for my two spoiled house cats.
This spring I'm going to stake my claim on a piece of the local community garden.
I'd love any tips experienced folks have to share, including favorite vegetable varieties that do well around here.

I'm a newbie too! I live in Grandview which is more easterly than most of y'all. I could REALLY use some help trying to decide what to plant. The previous owners believed in "natural planting" which to me meant they just let whatever grow wherever (front porch was completely covered with a MASSIVE Morning Glory vine) The lot doesn't seem to get much sun facing east and on the eastern side of a mountain with thick trees behind us. I am totally new to planting and have no idea what to do with the clean and now bare slate I have. I really appreciate any help!
