You may be right.

I had that problem two years back (2012) . The plants were vigorous but the leaves and growing tips spotted , died and dropped off exposing the fruits to sunscald.
A combination of oscillating, air-circulating fans plus running the denuded stalks through trays of rainwater really did the trick. The trays were netted to keep out mosquitos. No feeding for these stressed plants, just the initial composted peanut shells and rotted bark and coffee grounds mixed in the soil. The midstalk watering (they were submerged) took the strain off the main roots so the plants survived and thrived.

I only had 8 plants to deal with in this way but these produced almost 270 full sized tomatoes (indeterminate except for the yellow fruited one). Probably can't be done on a larger scale and far from your electricity source.
